We are joining together to demand that our work be recognized and rewarded.
All workers deserve:
It doesn’t matter if you’re an online platform worker, an adjunct professor or a subcontractor who can’t get hired directly—we are all struggling, in our own ways, with the challenges that come from an economy run on rules that were written for the 20th century.
Most people who work no longer rely on a lifetime relationship with one employer—some people in this Guild don’t even have one job at a time!—but our labor protections and systems of financial security are largely set up for people who go to work at the same place every day, and know from one week to the next exactly how many hours they’ll be working. That has to change, if workers are going to survive and thrive.
The guild is one of the oldest forms of labor organization, and has existed since the Middle Ages in different trades and professions. We’re choosing to unite as a guild, because we want to build a new kind of labor movement–one that gives us the power to win benefits and protections, regardless of the kind of work that we do.
The Indy Worker Guild is a project of the National Guestworker Alliance.
